“Radar” (because I had big ears) - “Biggin” (because I was the biggest kid in little league) - “Fish Stick” (a play off my last name) are the nicknames I remember most from my childhood. There were definitely worse nicknames though. “Booger” comes to mind. His name was Sean and I’m not sure why we called him Booger.
But it looks like nicknames might be going out of style. Wall Street Journal writer, Mark Oppenheimer, says they’re becoming rare—even among kids.
One reason may be that parents now take naming more seriously. For example, several of his son’s friends are named William, yet none go by “Billy.”
Other factor - They reduce people down to a single trait or incident and that’s kind of effed up.
What do you think?
