March Madness: No. 9 FAU stuns No. 8 Memphis with wild last-second layup in controversial finish

Memphis nearly escaped with a win on Friday night, which would have sent Penny Hardaway and the Tigers up with a very straightforward path to the Sweet 16.

Yet after officials opted for a jump ball call instead of granting Memphis a timeout, FAU was given one last chance.

The Owls capitalized instead.

Nicholas Boyd sank a game-winning layup in the final seconds to give No. 9 FAU the 66-65 win over No. 8 Memphis at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio. That gave the Owls their first ever NCAA tournament win and moved them into the second round, where they’ll take on Fairleigh Dickinson — which is fresh off its massive upset win over No. 1 Purdue.

The play was only set up after a very chaotic sequence that almost certainly should have resulted in a Memphis timeout. The Tigers, after turning the ball over at midcourt in the final seconds, then poked the ball free. Tigers guard Jayden Hardaway dove on it, and multiple Memphis players tried to call for a timeout — but officials missed it and called a jump ball instead.

As that’s not reviewable, and the Owls had the possession arrow, they got the ball with just five seconds left on the clock. That set up Boyd’s final layup, and eventually gave them the win.

The elder Hardaway was not happy.
