‘The Goonies’ Is Real! A 1600′s Shipwreck Has Been Found In A Cave On The Oregon Coast

In Oregon tales of pirate shipwrecks along the rocky coast have been told for generations. Some think those stories were the inspiration for one of the greatest 80′s movies ever made, The Goonies. Well now archeologists have discovered an actual 1600′s shipwreck partly hidden in a cave. in 1693 the Santo Cristo De Burgos was carrying silk and beeswax from the Philippines to Mexico when it disappeared. One of the more likely reasons it wasn’t found until now is that no one expected a ship travelling from the Philippines to Mexico would end up wrecked along the coast of Oregon, especially since technically Oregon didn’t exist yet.

That shipwreck is what they believe they’ve found now. Unlike The Goonies, however, there isn’t any pirate treasure from One-Eyed Willie. Since this boat was carrying perishable items like beeswax and silk, all of that has surely been washed away or eroded over the centuries. However some large pieces of timber, one still weighing 300 pounds, have been recovered and will soon be carbon tested to determine how old they are, and whether or not this is the missing Spanish galleon.
