Dallas Cops Celebrate Stealing $100,000 From A Woman Who Committed No Crime

Ballentine Dallas PD K9 (Dallas Police Department Facebook)

On Sunday, December 5th, the Dallas PD posted to their Facebook that one of their K9′s had sniffed out a huge pile of cash in a woman’s luggage.

We need to get him some treats! K9 Officer Ballentine does it again! On 12/2/21, the Lovefield Interdiction Squad seized over $100,000 with the help of Ballentine. Good job Ballentine!

Now notice that this doesn’t mention anything else except that their dog sniffed out a bunch of cash. The woman wasn’t arrested, there weren’t any drugs, although trace amounts of cocaine that can be found on practically all US currency could have triggered the dog to signal anyway. But the biggest part of this story is that there was NO CRIME COMMITTED! And while the Dallas PD claim they’re “following up” with the woman in an investigation, they still have even alluded to a crime having been committed. They just stole the money AND BRAGGED ABOUT IT ON FACEBOOK. This is known as Civil Asset Forfeiture and sadly is legal. Government entities like police departments can seize anything they want to if they can claim they think a crime COULD be involved, but they don’t have to prove anything and they don’t even have to provide any evidence that shows why they think that. They just take a person’s property, vehicles, houses, cash, etc. and say they believe maybe crime is involved. Then they person they took it from has to hire an attorney and try to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that they had committed no crime. This is the opposite of how our justice system is supposed to work.

This is a BS policy that both political sides know is wrong bat have yet to change the law to stop it. Read more about the whole case here.

Speaker of the Texas House Rep. Dade Phelan tweeted about the seizure telling a fellow Republican to pass reform during the next legislative session.
