California man accused of trying to bury wife at beach

SAN DIEGO — A California man on parole is accused of trying to bury his wife alive at a beach, authorities said.

Jose Luis Mares III, of Moreno Valley. was arrested Wednesday and charged on suspicion of attempted murder, assault causing great bodily injury, domestic violence, false imprisonment and violating terms of his parole, KGTV reported. He was being held without bail pending arraignment on March 5, the television station reported.

According to a news release from the Coronado Police Department, authorities received a call just after 9 p.m. from a woman who claimed her husband had tried to kill her at the beach. When officers arrived, they found the victim badly injured on the sidewalk.

The victim told investigators that she and her husband were having an argument on the Coronado waterfront and he assaulted her, KWSB reported. The woman added that her husband attempted to drag her into the ocean and then tried to bury her in a hole, the television station reported.

The woman was able to elude her husband and ran toward the highway, where a passerby found her, KGTV reported. Paramedics arrived and transported the victim to the hospital, the television station reported.

Police said they located Mares a short time later hiding in the backyard of a residence, according to the Coronado Police Department news release.
