Taco Bell to collect used sauce packets, recycle them

When you squeeze all that mild, hot or even diablo sauce out of the Taco Bell packet, don’t throw the empty pouch away. Taco Bell will take it off your hands to get them into a recycling center and out of a landfill.

Taco Bell said about 8 billion pounds of used sauce packets go into landfills each year, but now it’s working with TerraCycle to prevent that, CNN reported.

Customers sign up for a TerraCycle account, collect the empty packets in any recyclable container then, once full, ship the container to TerraCycle for free, Taco Bell said in a news release.

To get the word out, TacoBell will be displaying QR codes and other signs in restaurants, CNN reported.

They aren’t doing restaurant collections, however, because the company believes that most of its food is picked up through drive-thru or take-out.

It also cuts back on how much people have to drive, and “minimize their transportation footprint and ship their box of saved sauce packets once full.”

Taco Bell hopes to have all packaging be fully “recyclable, compostable or reusable” by 2025, CNN reported.
