Page 25 of Marvel Comics’ Secret Wars No. 8 magazine, drawn by Mike Zeck, sold for $3.36 million, including the buyer’s premium, Heritage Auctions announced in a news release.

Live bidding opened at $330,000 during the first day of the Dallas auction house’s four-day comic event sale, but it quickly rose past $3 million as bidding intensified.

The black symbiote suit would eventually lead to the emergence of another famed Marvel character, the villainous Venom, The Associated Press reported.

“We could not be happier, especially for our consignor, who bought the art in the late 1980s and treasured these pages ever since,” Joe Mannarino, Heritage Auctions’ New York Director of Comics and Comic Art, said in a statement. “Today’s results prove what we’ve long been saying: Comic book art is as beloved and valuable as anything put on canvas.”

Also Thursday, one of the few surviving copies of Superman’s debut, Action Comics No. 1, sold for $3.18 million, Heritage Auctions announced in its release.
