Martin Shkreli, known as the “Pharma Bro,” has been released from prison after serving just part of a sentence for lying to investors.

Shkreli became a well-known figure after buying the rights to a lifesaving drug used to treat AIDS, malaria, and cancer when he raised the price per pill from $13.50 to $750, The Associated Press reported.

“I am pleased to report that Martin Shkreli has been released from Allenwood prison and transferred to a BOP halfway house after completing all programs that allowed for his prison sentence to be shortened,” his attorney Ben Brafman said in a statement to the Washington Post.

Shkreli will complete the rest of his sentence at the halfway house, which is at an undisclosed location in New York, CNBC reported.

Shkreli had been sentenced to seven years in prison following his 2017 convictions for lying to investors of two hedge funds, withdrawing more money than he was entitled to, and defrauding investors in a drug company, the AP reported.

In April 2020, Shkreli requested to be released from prison temporarily to help develop a treatment for COVID-19, as we reported at the time. A judge denied the request, noting the claim was the type of “delusional self-aggrandizing behavior” that led to his arrest and conviction, the AP reported.

Immediately after leaving prison, Shkreli headed back to social media, where he posted a selfie to Facebook with the caption, “Getting out of real prison is easier than getting out of Twitter prison.”

Shkreli was banned from Twitter in 2017 after what was described as “targeted harassment” of a female journalist, The Washington Post reported at the time.

Shkreli has already appeared on Twitter after leaving prison. Posing with Shkreli in the backseat of a car, the driver posted a photo with the caption, “Picked up this guy hitchhiking. Says he’s famous.”
