Over $1 billion in federal funding put toward Hurricane Ian recovery

FEMA is continuing to help survivors jumpstart their recovery after Hurricane Ian.

In two weeks, FEMA has approved more than $327 million in federal disaster assistance for over 182,500 individuals and families.

According to WFTV, the U.S. Small Business Administration has approved $31 million in low-interest disaster loans to homeowners, renters and business owners.

As of Oct. 11, FEMA’s National Flood Insurance Program has received more than 35,000 flood insurance claims and paid more than $48 million to policyholders, including $35 million in advance payments.

FEMA is also still paying hotel and motel costs for those affected, which allows them to pay to participating hotels and motels in Alabama, Florida and Georgia that provide emergency shelter, WFTV reported.

Hundreds of inspectors have performed over 49,000 home inspections for those registered for federal disaster assistance.

According to The Associated Press, FEMA updated its pricing system for flood insurance last year.

Risk Rating 2.0 looks at the risk that an individual property will flood, considering its distance to water. The new pricing system raises rates for about three-quarters of policyholders and offers price decreases for the first time.

The AP reported that Congress sometimes provides additional aid after significant disasters, although that can take months to years to arrive.
