Missouri student wins scholarship, donates college fund to help another student pursue degree

ST. CHARLES, Mo. — A high school senior from St. Charles, Missouri, is hopeful his recent good fortune might help another classmate pursue dreams of higher education.

Joshua Nelson, 18, learned one week ago that he is one of five recipients of the Southeast Missouri State University’s President’s Scholarship for the 2021-2022 academic year.

“I’ll be majoring in biomedical sciences,” the St. Charles West High School standout told KSDK, noting he plans to enter the school’s pre-optometry program.

In turn, the three-year varsity basketball player and president of St. Charles West’s Multi-Cultural Achievement Committee also plans to donate his own personal college fund, which currently contains more than $1,000, to help another student go to college, KSDK reported.

“I really thought it was important to give back to my community that poured in so much to me,” Nelson told the TV station.

Nelson, aided by his parents and teachers, intends to accept applications for the special scholarship during the next few weeks. And while he is hopeful that other donors might step forward to help boost the amount of the final award, Nelson said that being in a position to help is his only motivation.

“Honestly, it makes me feel on top of the world. The fact that I can just help somebody a little bit makes me feel great, and I really want to see other people succeed,” Nelson told KSDK.

According to a news release issued by Southeast Missouri State University announcing the President’s Scholarship awardees, the $10,000 award, which covers tuition and housing during their freshman year, is annually renewable for those recipients who meet renewal criteria.

In addition to the achievements already listed, Southeast Missouri State University recognized Nelson’s standing as a huddle leader for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and member of the National Honor Society, National Society of Black Engineers and Black Student Union; his participation in the BEST Pharmacy Summer Institute and University of Missouri-St. Louis Bridge Program; and his community service, including tutoring for the Boys and Girls Club of St. Charles County and volunteering for the Refuge and Restoration Mobile Food Market.
