BALTIMORE — A group of Maryland engineering students have designed an edible “burrito tape” that will keep your burrito together while you are eating it.

For Design Day, engineering students at Johns Hopkins University created an edible tape for your burrito called “Tastee Tape.”

According to WRC-TV, the engineers behind the tape are an all-women group, who say the tape is edible and safe to eat. The tape also works for wraps and gyros.

The idea is to prevent a mess while you are enjoying lunch or dinner. According to a Johns Hopkins University news release, the team that designed the tape was inspired by their own experiences. The Tastee Tape is clear, edible and comprised of a “food-grade fibrous scaffold and an organic adhesive.” It works to keep everything in place as you eat.

“First, we learned about the science around tape and different adhesives, and then we worked to find edible counterparts,” said Tyler Guarino, who teamed up with fellow engineering seniors Marie Eric, Rachel Nie, and Erin Walsh on the project, according to a news release from Johns Hopkins University.

The Tastee Tape even got the attention of Jimmy Fallon who talked about it on The Tonight Show on Tuesday evening. He said “it’s about time” for an invention like this.

WBAL-TV says the students are working on applying for a patent for their invention, which is one of the reasons their formula will remain a secret.
