Tyler Jerdo pleaded guilty to ill-treatment of animals, possession with intent to distribute meth, resisting arrest and failure to stop for blue lights, WHNS reported. Jerdo was sentenced to 12 years — suspended to four years — in prison, followed by three years of probation.

Jerdo was arrested in March after police said he used a power drill and bored two 4-inch screws through a 5-month-old puppy’s paws, attaching them to a door frame. Union County sheriff’s deputies found the animal barricaded inside a bathroom.

An incident report obtained by WYFF said that when deputies arrived at the home, there were items — including a bird bath and an air conditioning unit — blocking the bathroom door.

“This incident not only traumatized the poor animal he abused, but traumatized the entire community of people who love and care for animals and had to read the shocking facts of this terrible case,” solicitor Kevin Brackett told WHNS. “Our pets provide us with so much joy and companionship and expect so little in return. To have such a small and helpless animal treated so cruelly and callously defies the imagination. I am gratified that Judge Griffith imposed a sentence that not only speaks to the horror of this case, but serves as a warning that the legal system will stand up for defenseless animals when they are abused.”

The dog survived the attack and recovered from its injuries. The solicitor’s office told WSPA that the puppy was adopted into a loving home.
