Gen. Colin Powell memorial information released

WASHINGTON — A memorial service for former Gen. Colin Powell will be held on Nov. 5 at the Washington National Cathedral.

The service will be by invitation only and will have limited seating, Peggy Cifrino said in a statement, according to The Associated Press.

It will be held at noon, Reuters reported.

Powell died Monday of complications from COVID-19. He had been vaccinated but had multiple myeloma that affects the immune system, People magazine reported.

He also had early-stage Parkinson’s disease, Reuters reported.

Powell was 84.

The National Cathedral has been the site of services including former President George H.W. Bush and Sen. John McCain, WRC reported.

Powell was a member of the Army for 35 years. He was eventually a military assistant to former Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger. He became the commander of the Army’s 5th Corps in Germany and served as national security assistant to President Ronald Regan.

He was appointed the first Black Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in 1989. He also was the first Black Secretary of State under President George W. Bush in 2001, the AP reported.
