The pair paid a man $100 to use his ID to book the room at Motel 41 in Evansville, Indiana, The Evansville Courier & Press and AL.com reported.

They had paid to stay 14 days at the motel, AL.com reported.

Officers saw Casey White and Vicky White, who are not related but were in a relationship, leave their room and drive away in a Cadillac.

That exit started a pursuit that ended with the Cadillac crashed, Casey White arrested and Vicky White dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Vanderburgh County Sheriff Dave Wedding told CNN that the man, who was homeless and a sex offender, did not break the law by taking the money and booking the room. Officials don’t think that he knew that the couple was wanted.

Casey White told law enforcement officials about the arrangement during an interview after his arrest. The man was arrested on an unrelated drug charge on May 12 and was being held on a $500 bond when he corroborated Casey White’s statement.

Casey White is being held in a state prison in Bessemer, Alabama and has been charged with escape in the first degree. Before his escape, he was already serving a 75-year prison sentence for a 2015 crime spree, the U.S. Marshals Service said.

He was transferred to the Lauderdale County Detention Center, where Vicky White was the assistant director of corrections, after being charged with capital murder in the 2015 stabbing of a woman.
