In a recent interview Tesla bassist Brian Wheat said he hates the term “Hair Metal” and thinks it should be replaced with something like 80′s rock, and I agree in some ways. He says the term is condescending and reduces what is great music to just being about someone’s hair and not the songs.
““I don’t like it. Just talk about the music, because that’s what matters. Not about the hair. If you wanna call it anything, call it ’80s metal — call it 1980s rock.”
Personally I’ve always thought Tesla was a straight up rock band that got big in the 80′s but I’ve never considered them one of the hair bands. There were definitely some bands that got signed and promoted but didn’t really have much in the way of talent, they really just had “the look” of the 80′s and record labels bought as many of them as they could. There are a lot of 80′s bands that shouldn’t be relegated to just their hair like Tesla, Motley Crue, and many more. So do you think the term “hair” anything should be dropped when talking about the 80′s?
