Now before I write my little entertainment blog here I have to preface everything with this: This is NOT any kind of legal advice and you should never break the law, including the speed limit. Yes, you absolutely CAN get a speeding ticket for as little as 1 mile over the posted limit, and the police have every legal right to do so. This blog is meant as entertainment and observation only.
Now on to the fun part.
Recently in St. Petersburg, Florida, the cities police department carried out a special operation targeting speeders at 3 specific locations. The department stated that “The operation is part of an ongoing effort to reduce deaths and injuries associated with traffic crashes in the city. It also serves as a reminder to drivers to slow down and pay attention.”
The 3 locations they posted officers for the op were:
- Roosevelt Boulevard from I-275 to Dr. MLK Jr. St. North,
- Gandy Boulevard from I-275 to 4th Street North, and
- 4th Street North from 38th Avenue North to Gandy Blvd. North
I remember this happening because I use that exact stretch of Roosevelt every day to get to and from work, and I saw the cops on bikes clocking people both times that day. Overall the PD reported that they handed out over 200 speeding tickets at all 3 locations. Now here’s where it gets interesting. The PD reported that the most tickets were issued to 105 drivers that were going 15 to 19 mph over the speed limit. 96 tickets were given to drivers going 20 to 29 mph over the limit. And 7 tickets were issued to those going 30 mph over! That’s a total of 208 tickets, which cover their total of over 200. What I noticed is that they didn’t bother citing anyone unless they were going AT LEAST 15 to 19 over the speed limit. I speed when I drive, we all do just to different extents. But I can’t recall a time when I was going anywhere near 15 miles per hour OVER. I’m usually a comfortable 5-10 mph max. So these people were absolutely hauling!
Now, again, I’m not endorsing speeding, or hinting that you can get away with it as long as you’re only going a little over the limit. The cops can and will ticket you for even a mile over, although that would be hard to hold up in traffic court and you could probably get it dismissed easily. But this speed trap at least suggests that they don’t bother with you unless you’re REALLY speeding. And 20 mph over the limit is usually all kinds of dangerous. So don’t be crazy out there, but also you don’t have to go the exact speed limit, and PLEASE don’t be driving 10 mph UNDER! In my opinion that’s even MORE dangerous than speeding a little.
