Go Fish: Spring Flats Frenzy

Captain Bill Miller
Captain Bill Miller

By Capt. Bill Miller

John Deerin and friends, fishing with Capt. Billy Miller, loaded the boat with sheepshead up to 6 pounds fishing a shallow wreck in 6 feet of water this week. Fly lined, tail hooked shrimp cast to the edge of the structure produced instant bites during the morning tide.

When the tide changed Miller and friends moved to the flats of Ft. Desoto and had non stop action on speckled trout using lime colored Lil John soft plastics and DOA Deadly Combinations.

Capt. Chris Wiggins reports that angler Mike Dodaro caught a 32 inch trout using jumbo shrimp over the sand pot holes near Tierra Verde. Also included in the catch were 6 other trout over 25 inches.

Good pompano reports are coming in from the Hernando Beach area. Anglers fishing the hard rock bars using jigs and live shrimp under a popping cork are also scoring with big speckled trout.

Amberjack fishing has been great for Capt. Tony Cellamare in 150 feet. Big flannel mouth grunts and blue runners are hooking AJ’s to 60 pounds. Live chumming brought the jacks to the top where Cellamare and crew had a blast catching them on top water lures.

All of the flats big three, trout, redfish and snook, are being caught using white bait in Anna Maria Sound says Capt. Mac Gregory. Gregory says the warm days has jumped started the spring flats frenzy.
