Go Fish: Kingfish action is still red hot

Kingfish action is still red hot if the high winds will let anglers offshore to find them. The strong easterly winds we are having tend to bring the bait fish close to shore and with them come the kings, Spanish mackerel and as of late black fin tuna. Look for these game fish closer to shore than normal and luckily for us, out of the wind.

Brad Johnson and friends fishing markers 9 and 10 in the Egmont ship channel caught a 41 pound kingfish on a 4 inch threadfin herring slow trolling.

Redfish were eating heavily for Capt. Chris Wiggins and the “Fishing with Bill Miller” film crew. Fishing the Ft. Desoto area using fresh cut threadfins Wiggins, LPGA golf star Brittany Lincicome and I caught redfish steadily all afternoon. A few big trout were in the mix including a 6 pounder I caught using a live white bait under a cork.

Big redfish schools have been spotted at Tarpon Key, outside of Weedon Island and in the 4th street area.

Capt. Billy Miller has been fishing inside due to the winds and has been finding great trout action over the grass flats. Easy limits can be had using live white baits. Miller recommends using a few, not a lot, of live chummers to bring in mackerel, blue fish, flounder also into play.

Local resident tarpon have been spotted and hooked for a couple of weeks now at bay area bridges. A few schools of migrating have shown up and picked up the tarpon action.
