Time to ask your grandpa for his best hand-me-downs. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis will perform at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards. The appearance will be the Seattle-based pair’s VMA debut, just another highlight of a truly meteoric year for the duo.
So now for the most important question: What song will they perform off their hit-rich album The Heist? Should we gear up for a musty, R. Kelly-smellin' performance of “Thrift Shop,” or maybe we should watch the ceiling as we put our hands up for “Can’t Hold Us”?
Actually, none of the above. In a surprising but profound choice, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis will perform their anthem for marriage equality, “Same Love.” Damn right we support this.
If you haven’t heard the pair’s mellow testament to equal love, start memorizing the lyrics now. “Same Love” is up for Best Video with a Social Message and features vocals by fellow Seattleite Mary Lambert. The Heist is up for an additional five VMAs — tying fellow performer Justin Timberlake for the most nods of the night.
Prepare to pop some tags Sunday, August 25.
