In the Jazz Is: NOW! lecture and demonstration, band members will play pieces and deconstruct them for audiences in a non-academic way. The audience will help pick the songs and decide how to arrange them. Registration is required by calling 813.222.1040.
Jon Batiste and Stay Human is a modern jazz ensemble noted for its world-class music, high energy and uplifting spirit. Their album Social Music is available on iTunes or Amazon MP3.
At 27, Batiste is considered by many to be one of the most exciting and progressive new crossover talents on the scene today. His modern take on the American songbook, through the channels of a virtuosic pedigree in jazz and classical music, is attracting critical acclaim as well as audiences across all demographics. Together with his band, Stay Human, he is creating a unique grassroots movement that encourages accessibility and appreciation in the art of the live performance. Apart from his natural focus, Batiste is also a noted advocate for music education and a regular figure on television and in film (HBO’s Treme, Spike Lee’s Red Hook Summer).
Stay Human includes saxophonist Eddie Barbash, percussionist Jamison Ross, percussionist Joe Saylor and bassist Barry Stephenson.
This lecture and demonstration is part of a broader Straz Center residency by Jon Batiste and Stay Human that also includes a performance at 8 p.m., on Tuesday, February 18th in Ferguson Hall.
