Event Description Please join us at our Pardoll Family Lecture Series event on December 12, 2012. Greg Dawson, a columnist at the Orlando Sentinel, will share a compelling survival story of his mother, Zhanna Arshanskaya Dawson. Zhanna was a young, incredibly talented pianist when the Nazis invaded Ukraine. She hid under an assumed non-Jewish identity and survived thanks to her musical genius by playing the piano in a  musical troupe that entertained the Germans. The audience didn’t realize she was Jewish or that she was performing for the memory of her parents. “Just live” her father told her when she last saw him. Zhanna and her sister who performed with her are the sole survivors from their family. Her son, Greg Dawson, grew up without knowing his mother’s powerful story. Zhanna didn’t want to burden her children with her traumatic experiences. When she finally shared it he recounted it in the book “Hiding in the Spotlight. A Musical Prodigy's Story of Survival.” Through the Pardoll Family Lecture Series our audience can now learn about Zhanna’s survival. The program will be followed by Q and A and book-signing.
