More than 150,000 students around the county will travel to and from school by bus, bicycle, privates vehicles or on foot. With all of this additional traffic comes an increased risk for motor vehicle and pedestrian accidents. Please slow down and be extra careful beginning Monday. Remember to yield to pedestrians at cross walks and obey the 15 m.p.h. speed limits in school zones. Remain alert behind the wheel, refraining from talking or texting on your mobile phone so you can be on the lookout for our young students walking to school or waiting at bus stops. Parents, also remind your children to remain alert and stay off their cell phones while walking or riding their bike to school. During the first week of school, you may see me joining our public safety personnel, stationed at school zones with signs, banners and vehicles on display to help remind motorists to be extra careful.
